            On July 28th, Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Special Victim’s Unit (SVU) was notified that registered sex offender, Wayne Bumpers failed to bring in his certified verification letter within three days in person at ACSO, as pursuant to the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry.  On August 1, 2023, Mr. Bumpers was arrested and charged with 1 ct. F-Failure to Register Sex Offender and given a $30,000 secured bond.

On 07/25/2017 Randy Turk was released from prison for a sexual assault pursuant to his release he was required to report to the Alamance County Sheriffs Office to register as a sex offender. Mr. Turk did not report to the Sheriff’s Office and his location was unknown. Mr. Turk was arrested on 07/20/2023 in Pennsylvania on a sexual assault reported in Burlington and investigated by Burlington police.  He was returned to Alamance County. He was served with the outstanding warrant for arrest from Burlington Police and is being held in the county jail. On 08/03/2023, Mr. Turk was charged and arrested for 7 counts of failure to register,

SHERIFF JOHNSON ATTENDS THE NORTH CAROLINA SHERIFFS’ ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL BUSINESS CONFERENCE

Last week, the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association hosted sheriffs, sheriffs’ personnel and their families from across the state for their Annual Business Conference. Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson was in attendance. Commenting on their experience at the Annual Business Conference, Sheriff Johnson said, “I always look forward to the opportunity to meet with fellow sheriffs at Association events. It is important for us to collaborate and always work to enhance the Office of Sheriff in North Carolina. The Annual Business Conference is just one of the many ways the Association allows us to do that.”

The Annual Business Conference is an opportunity for sheriffs and sheriffs’ personnel to gather for networking, panel discussions, and training programs which cover a variety of topics related to law enforcement. Topics covered during this year’s Annual Business Conference included the sheriff’s role in school safety and active shooter response procedures, among others. Attendees also heard presentations from guest speakers and attended a number of meetings throughout the conference.

The Association also elects new Executive Committee officers each year at the conference. This year’s elections resulted in five sheriffs being elected to new offices:

  • President – Sheriff Darren Campbell, Iredell County
  • First Vice President – Sheriff Mike Roberson, Chatham County
  • Second Vice President – Sheriff Ricky Buchanan, McDowell County
  • Third Vice President – Sheriff Clee Atkinson, Edgecombe County
  • Treasurer – Sheriff Van Shaw, Cabarrus County

Outgoing President Charles Blackwood, Orange County, will transition into the role of Chairman of the Association’s Executive Committee and Sheriff Alan Jones, Caldwell County, was reelected to serve as Secretary.

Newly-elected Association President Darren Campbell remarked, “The Annual Business Conference is always an excellent opportunity for sheriffs to get together to discuss important issues we are facing, network, and conduct Association business. I am excited for the opportunity to serve as the President of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association and hope to help enhance public safety in our communities while representing the sheriffs of North Carolina.”

Seventy-Five-Year-Old Arrested For Multiple Drug Charges During Routine Traffic Stop

On Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at 8:18 p.m., Deputies conducted a traffic stop at W. Webb Ave. and Glen Raven Rd., Burlington, N.C. During the stop, Deputies discovered the driver, Albert Lee Woods, was driving while license permanently suspended.

While on scene, a K9 indicated a positive alert of contraband during an open air sniff of the vehicle. Deputies conducted a probable cause search finding heroin, cocaine, marijuana, multiple quantities of different types of pills, and a digital scale.

Mr. Woods was arrested and transported to the Alamance County Detention Center where he remains.

Couple Arrested For Multiple B&Es At Eastern Alamance High School

From July 7, 2023 to July 24, 2023, Administrators at Eastern Alamance High School reported three (3) break-ins to numerous outbuildings on the school’s campus near the athletic fields. Various items were reported stolen including a John Deere Gator UTV, back pack leaf blower, numerous gas cans, and a cooler.

As the investigation continued, Detectives developed Jacob Carl Beasley and his girlfriend, Ariel Marie DeAngelo, as suspects. As a result of a search warrant of the couple’s residence and vehicles, Detectives found and recovered the stolen property.

On Thursday, July 27, 2023, Mr. Beasley and Ms. DeAngelo were located by ACSO Patrol Deputies who conducted a traffic stop on the pair. Both were arrested and transported to the Alamance County Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing with additional charges possible.

Caregiver Charged With Indecent Liberties With A Child

On Sunday, May 21, 2023, Investigators with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit (SVU) were informed that a male caregiver of a minor was believed to be committing indecent liberties with a child.

During the investigation, SVU found probable cause existed to charge the caregiver identified as Billy Michael Daniels. Mr. Daniels was arrested on Thursday, July 27, 2023 and transported to the Alamance County Detention Center.

Suspect In B&E Of Ossipee Baptist Church and Western Middle School Arrested

On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, Deputies received a report of a break in at Ossipee Baptist Church on Old NC Hwy 87, Elon, NC. The reporting party told Deputies that a computer and music equipment were stolen.

On Wednesday, July 5, 2023, Deputies received a report of a break in of outbuildings at Western Middle School on Eldon Dr., Elon, NC. The reporting party told Deputies that footballs and a water cooler were stolen.

During the investigations, Detectives determined that Jonathan Lynn Wright was the suspect in both break ins. Detectives developed probable cause to request a search warrant.  A search warrant was executed at the residence of Wright’s girlfriend. Detectives found property which was stolen from the Church and middle school.

Detectives secured warrants for Mr. Wright’s arrest but his whereabouts were unknown.

On Friday, July 28, 2023, Mr. Wright was arrested by the Burlington Police Department.

This case remains under investigation.

ACSO To Honor The Memory Of Deputy Killed In 1936

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard will honor the memory of slain Deputy Lawrence George Gowens with a wreath laying ceremony on Monday, July 31, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.  The ceremony will take place in the cemetery located next to the Historic Providence Christian Church which is located at 819 N. Main St., Graham, N.C.

Deputy Sheriff Lawrence Gowens was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance two doors away from the jail in Graham, N.C.
Deputy Gowens, who also served as the county jailer, heard a woman’s screams when her husband, Robert Campbell, shot her in the arm. He ran to the home and confronted the suspect, who shot him with a shotgun. Deputy Gowens was taken to Rainey Hospital in Burlington, N.C. where he died 90 minutes later.
Campbell was convicted of Deputy Gowens’ murder and sent to prison. He was later released and has since died.
Deputy Gowens was survived by his wife, two sons, and three daughters.

Defective Taillights Lead To Felony Drug Charge

On Monday, July 24, 2023 at 3:43 a.m., Deputies conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Sandy Cross Rd. and Haw River Hopedale Rd. north of Burlington, N.C. The black Toyota Camry was stopped for an equipment violation, defective taillights.

During the stop, Deputies detected a strong odor of what was believed to be marijuana from the vehicle. The driver, Jimmy Walter Aguilar Zavala, was found to have been smoking marijuana. A K9 on scene indicated a positive alert during an open-air sniff.

Deputies conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle where baggies of marijuana along with a larger quantity of marijuana were located in a back pack. A digital scale was found in the center console. Deputies also learned that Mr. Zavala was driving a vehicle while his license was suspended.

Mr. Zavala was arrested and transported to the Alamance County Detention Center.

Sex Offender Facing Seven Felony Charges

On Thursday, July 20, 2023, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit (SVU) began an investigation in reference to a registered sex offender identified as Alberto Gamboa Sanchez. It was believed that Mr. Sanchez had several on-line identifiers which were not registered with the Sheriff’s Office as required by law. Sex offenders are required to notify the Sheriff’s Office of all online identifiers they use including social media platforms and online messaging platforms.

Investigators discovered several online posts of Mr. Sanchez working out at a local gym. Detectives were then able to establish probable cause to charge Mr. Sanchez.

Mr. Sanchez was arrested on Friday, July 21, 2023 and transported to the Alamance County Detention Center.
