ACSO Charges Male for 18 Stolen Catalytic Converters

On December 6, 2021, an Alamance County Sheriff’s Office deputy made contact with Kevin Brown at the Shell Station on S. NC 87 Highway. Mr. Brown was found to be in possession of 18 catalytic converters in the cargo area of his vehicle. 

On December 7, the Sheriff’s Office obtained warrants for Mr. Brown’s arrest given the recent (December 1, 2021) update to the Larceny of Motor Vehicle Parts statute. In the new law, it is now illegal to be in possession of any catalytic converters unless (1) you are the registered owner of the car from which the converter came off of, or (2) you are the owner or employee of a car repair shop, car dealership or licensed salvage/metal recycling company. This new law assumes anyone in possession of a catalytic converter for reasons other than those listed above have obtained the converter by some form of theft, direct or indirect.
 
Mr. Brown was arrested on December 10, 2021, and served with 18 counts of Larceny of Motor Vehicle Parts. He was given a $150,000 secured bond.

ACSO Felony Charges

On December 7, 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop due to a left of center road violation. During the stop, a K-9 was utilized for an open-air sniff with a positive indication. Officers conducted a probable cause search and found a methamphetamine pipe in the center console of the vehicle. During the stop, Bryce Joseph Rhew admitted to having methamphetamine in his wallet and was charged with possession of a schedule II and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also served with two warrants for larceny and shoplifting.

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division conducted two Detention Center investigations that resulted in felonies.

On Thursday December 2, 2021, a female reported to the Detention Center supervisor that an inmate, identified as Tyrone Jackson Jr., was threatening to do harm to her boyfriend who was also an inmate if she did not pay Mr. Jackson $900 dollars through Cash App. These threats were confirmed using the recorded calls, and Tyrone Jackson Jr., was charged with one count of felony extortion. He was given an additional $15,000 secured bond.

On Monday, December 6, 2021, inmate, Quintin Markel Carson Hicks, assaulted a Detention Officer after refusing to return to his cell. Inmate Hicks punched and choked the Detention Officer during the altercation. Inmate Hicks was charged with one count of felony assault by strangulation and was given an additional $15,000 secured bond.

ACSO Felony Charges

On December 4, 2021, at approximately 11:00 a.m., the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office responded to Isaac Holt Trail in reference to multiple gun shots fired near a residence. Officers pulled into a parking lot on S. NC Highway 87 and saw Trent Donavan Taylor on the left side of a barn with a black rifle in his hands firing down towards the woods. The officer activated the siren, and Mr. Taylor proceeded behind the barn and ran through the woods ignoring commands to stop. A K9 helped lead officers to a barn with a grain silo where he eventually complied with orders and exited. 

Mr. Taylor was transported to the Alamance County Detention Center where he was charged with possession of a firearm by felon and given a $5,000 secured bond.

On December 4, 2021, at approximately 3:00 p.m., the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office participated in a check point at the intersection of Thompson Mill Road and Bass Mountain Road. A deputy observed a vehicle that tried to avoid the intersection and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, Patrick Neil Davis, had a suspended driver’s license and one outstanding order for arrest. Mr. Davis was detained. The officer then deployed a K9 for an exterior sniff of the vehicle who gave a positive indication for the presence of narcotics on the passenger’s side door. Two small baggies stuffed under a seat were found consistent with narcotic use and distribution. 

Mr. Davis was transported to the Alamance County Detention Center. During booking, the sergeant discovered loose cocaine in the seat of the patrol vehicle where Mr. Davis had been sitting. He was then charged with felony possession of cocaine and cited for driving while license was revoked. He was also served an outstanding order for arrest. Mr. Davis received a $5,000 secured bond and preset a $400 cash bond on the OFA.

ACSO Charges for Possession of Schedule II

For Immediate Release

On December 3, 2021, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office was called in reference to check a well-being regarding Susan Allison who was allegedly driving children while under the influence of drugs. Deputies arrived at the residence and found Ms. Allison in the driver’s seat. After speaking with officers, she gave them permission to search her vehicle. 

The search yielded eight 20mg of Vyvanse and twelve 20mg methylphenidate hydrochloride of which both are classified as schedule two. Ms. Allison was charged with two felonies and given a $5,000 secured bond.

ANET Recent Drug Arrests

The Alamance Narcotics Enforcement Team (ANET) conducted a drug investigation at 171 Salvet Street, Apartment 209 in Burlington, NC. After a two-month investigation, a significant number of narcotics were seized.

On December 2, 2021, investigators followed a suspect identified as Miguel Angel Lopez leaving the Salvet Street address in a vehicle. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office stopped and arrested Lopez on the highway in Guilford County where three kilograms of cocaine were seized.

Investigators followed up with a search warrant at 171 Salvet Street, Apartment 209 in Burlington. The search of the apartment yielded 1.5 kilograms of cocaine, 3 kilograms of fentanyl, ¼ kilogram methamphetamine, 6.5 ounces of MDMA (Ecstasy), 6.5 lbs. of marijuana, four firearms, and a significant quantity of U.S. Currency. Two other suspects were identified in the investigation as co-conspirators of Lopez. They have not been located at this time.

ACSO Charges Felonies for Residential Break-In

For Immediate Release

On the morning of November 20, 2021, an Alamance County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on patrol on Durham Street Extension when he observed a silver Monte Carlo with unique chrome rims pulling out of a driveway. This Monte Carlo was recognized from a BOLO sent out the day before by the Gibsonville Police Department for being involved in a residential break-in. The deputy stopped the vehicle and learned that the occupants had just broken into the residence where they were exiting.

Mario Lynndale Williams and Khalid Devontae Gwynn were arrested on outstanding processes. They both were additionally charged with Felony Breaking and Entering, Felony Larceny after Breaking and Entering, and Felony Larceny of a Firearm.

ACSO Recent Felony Charges

On November 9, 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a stolen vehicle. During the investigation, deputies discovered that Michael George Frederico had taken the vehicle on October 30 without permission and never returned it.

Mr. Frederico was charged with a felony larceny of a motor vehicle. He was located by the Burlington Police Department on November 10, 2021.

On November 25, 2021, the Sheriff’s Office responded to Thompson Mill Road in reference to a stolen vehicle. The victim left her vehicle in a driveway, and Sherry Robertson was seen driving the car away from a camera on the front porch.

Deputies began searching for the vehicle and located it on South 87 Highway. Ms. Robertson was arrested and charged with a felony larceny of a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. She was given a $2,000 secured bond.

On November 27, 2021, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Alamance County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on Maple Avenue due to the vehicle having a faulty brake light. After a positive K9 indication, deputies searched the vehicle and found a plastic bag of crystal methamphetamine under the gear shift, a loaded 9mm handgun behind the center console, as well as marijuana, digital scales, and needles. 

The driver, Antonio Onofrio Wakefield, was arrested and charged with three felonies and three misdemeanors. He was given a $20,000 secured bond.

ACSO Charges for Multiple Felonies Including Assault on Detention Officer

On November 24, 2021, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Alamance County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Glen Todd Smith Jr., for burglary and larceny of a motor vehicle. Once arrested, Mr. Smith was taken to the Alamance County Detention Center where he was served his warrants and turned over to the custody of staff at the Detention Center. 

During booking, Mr. Smith was placed in a holding cell. A female sergeant walked into the cell to have the phone turned on so that he could attempt to call friends and family in order make bond. While the phone was being activated, the sergeant picked up the receiver, and Mr. Smith slammed her head into the concrete wall. She fell to the ground, and he exited the cell and shut the door, locking the officer inside. 

Mr. Smith then went towards the exit of the detention center and was ordered by a lieutenant to stop. He then proceeded to run away and was caught near the exit door where he broke a plastic mail bin over the lieutenant’s head and then struck the officer in the head. Officers were then able to secure Mr. Smith. 
               
The female sergeant was treated for her injuries at the Kernodle Clinic, and the lieutenant sustained minor scratches from the incident. 
 
The District Attorney’s Office assisted with the investigation, and Mr. Smith was charged with the following:  

  • (F) 1ct – First Degree Kidnapping
  • (F) 1ct – Assault on Detention Employee Inflicting Serious Injury
  • (F) 1ct – Malicious Conduct by Prisoner
  • (M) 1ct – Misdemeanor Escape Local Jail
  • (M) 1ct – Assault on Government Official
  • (M) 1ct – Injury to Personal Property

Investigators also served two additional outstanding warrants for: 

  • Failure to appear (M) 1ct – Probation Violation
  • Failure to appear (M) 1ct – DV Protective Order Violation

Mr. Smith was given a $103,000 secured bond and had his first appearance on November 24, 2021. The District Attorney’s Office will be sending this case to Grand Jury on November 29, 2021. During his first appearance, Mr. Smith’s bond was increased to $305,000 secured.
 


ACSO Charges Male for Indecent Liberties with Child

On November 1, 2021, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office received a report from Child Protective Services regarding an indecent liberties case that happened the previous year. 

After an investigation and interviews, Billy Keck was arrested on November 12, 2021, for indecent liberties with a child. He was given a $25,000 unsecured bond.

Inmate Passes Away in Alamance County Detention Center

On November 22, 2021, at approximately 8:00 p.m., detention officers discovered an unresponsive inmate during their rounds. An officer immediately performed lifesaving measures and administered Narcan, and the inmate regained consciousness and was transported to Cone Health Alamance Regional Medical Center.
 
About 45 minutes later, detention officers found another inmate, Gerard Barnes, Jr., who was also unresponsive. Officers attempted to perform lifesaving measures until EMS arrived. Paramedics continued lifesaving efforts, but unfortunately, Mr. Barnes passed away. The official cause of death has not been determined and will be released by the medical examiner. As per standard protocol, the NC State Bureau of Investigation was notified and is assisting in the investigation.
 
After a search of the detention center, investigators found a baggie containing a small amount of powder substance which tested positive for fentanyl. Torre Jamel Haith was charged with a felony for possession of a controlled substance on jail premises.
 
Mr. Haith was arrested on November 5, 2021, and charged with a felony for maintaining a vehicle that was used for keeping and selling a controlled substance, a misdemeanor for possession of drug paraphernalia, two felonies for trafficking methamphetamine, a felony for possession with the intent to sell and deliver a controlled substance, and a felony for possession of a firearm by a felon. Mr. Haith was quarantined for two weeks per the ACSO COVID-19 policy and released into the general population on November 19, 2021. 
 
This investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
