In the Fall of 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit/Human Exploitation Team received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children involving child sexual abuse material being uploaded to the KiK Messenger App.
Detectives opened an investigation which culminated in a search warrant for 733 Coley Court in Haw River, NC. During the search and investigation, a mobile device was examined and found to contain child sexual abuse material, images, and videos. The resident, Richard Hultz, was arrested at the scene. He was charged with six felonies of Third Degree Sexual Exploitation of Minors.

On December 21, 2021, an Alamance County Sheriff’s Office employee reviewed information that indicated that Amanda Rose Gomez and Inmate Billy Staley were working together to sneak something in a thermal shirt into the Detention Center. Detectives with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office immediately opened an investigation and observed someone bringing a package into the Detention Center lobby on December 22, 2021.
The package was sent to the Criminal Investigations Division where suboxone strips were located sewn into a thermal shirt. Billy Staley and Amanda Gomez were both charged with a felony of conspiring to deliver a controlled substance.
On January 6, 2022, Ms. Gomez turned herself into the Alamance County Detention Center to be served. She was given a $10,000 secured bond for her charges.

On January 9, 2022, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on S NC 87 Highway. During the course of the stop, deputies found that the registration plate on the vehicle was stolen; they also located marijuana, Xanax, and a glass container of methamphetamine on the passenger, Raina Lane Troxler.
Ms. Troxler was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana Paraphernalia, Possession of Stolen Property, and Possession of Schedule IV.

On Thursday evening of January 6, 2022, a detention officer with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office entered a cell and announced to Inmate Vladimir Vladimiro Vazquez that he had a dinner tray for him. Without warning, the inmate hit the officer repeatedly in the face, temple, and back of the head until he fell to the floor hitting his head on the metal floor plate. After assaulting the officer, the inmate ran back into the cell. The officer was transported to the hospital and treated for a concussion as well as injuries to the face.
Mr. Vazquez was charged with Assault Inflicting Physical Injury on a Detention Officer and given a secured bond of $100,000.

On December 29, 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office responded to an apparent opioid overdose. During the investigation, Gregory Isaiah Thomas of 314 Hooker Street in Burlington, N.C., was identified as the suspect who sold fentanyl to the victim, leading to their overdose.
The Sheriff’s Office charged Mr. Thomas for the Sale and Delivery of a Schedule II Controlled Substance. On January 4, 2022, members of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit arrested Mr. Thomas at his residence. During his arrest, officers found cocaine in his possession.
Mr. Thomas was charged with Sell/Deliver Schedule II Controlled Substance, Possession of Cocaine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He received a $20,000 secured bond.

On January 4, 2022, at approximately 2:00 a.m., the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on South NC Highway 87 for a traffic violation. When deputies approached the vehicle, they detected the odor of marijuana. A probable cause search of the vehicle yielded a stolen firearm in the trunk. The driver, Martayvin Leeshawn Clark, was charged with Possessing a Firearm by a Felon and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. At the time of the arrest, Mr. Clark had pending charges for Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, and Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling.

On December 20, 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Bass Mountain Road due to the driver speeding. After officers were given consent to search the vehicle, they found methamphetamine which belonged to the passenger. Kalyee Marie Smelser was charged with possession and given a $10,000 unsecured bond.

On December 21, 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop. Once deputies stopped the vehicle, the sergeant noticed methamphetamine on the passenger of the vehicle. A probable cause search yielded additional methamphetamine and a heroin kit along with other drug paraphernalia. The passenger, Morgan Rio Powell, also had an additional bag of methamphetamine and fentanyl. Ms. Powell was charged and given a $15,000 secured bond.

On December 14, 2021, deputies with the Alamance County Special Victims Unit and Criminal Investigations Division responded to Burch Bridge Road in reference to a sexual assault. Upon arrival, investigators were advised that the juvenile victim had been raped by Francisco Javier Monroy Vargas over the course of three years. Mr. Vargas was charged with first degree forcible rape, communicating threats, statutory rape of a child less than 15, statutory sex offense with a child less than 15, indecent liberties with a child, and second degree forcible rape.

On December 10, 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office responded to Sykes Road in reference to a report of a trespasser. Upon arrival, deputies found the suspect, Dana McBride, inside of the foyer. The victim stated that Ms. McBride was trespassed the previous evening.
Ms. McBride was charged with possession of methamphetamine and second degree trespassing and given a $3,500 secured bond.
On December 10, 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop for an expired registration license plate. During the stop, a K-9 was utilized with a positive indication of the vehicle. After a probable cause search, deputies located one large bag and several smaller bags of methamphetamine. Jennifer Lynn Scearce was charged with possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession with the intent to sell and deliver a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was given a $10,000 secured bond.

On December 8, 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office was contacted in reference to a motor vehicle theft that occurred on Wyatt Road. Deputies were told that the victim’s truck had been towed when in fact it was sold to a tow truck driver without the owner’s permission by Brandi Maxwell. Ms. Maxwell was charged with a felony for obtaining property by false pretenses and given a $5,000 unsecured bond.
On September 28, 2021, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at Angier Court in Green Level in reference to a sexual assault. The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit started their investigation, and CSI began collecting evidence from the vehicle where the assault took place. The Sheriff’s Office was able to charge Jacob Aranda with second degree forcible rape, assault by strangulation, and resisting a public officer. He was arrested on December 6, 2021.
