In a recent story which aired on Fox8 entitled, “Triad police running out of storage for seized weapons,” the article, we believe, led viewers to think that the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office sells seized guns to the community (public).

This is untrue.

Seized, and/or found guns which have been altered, a removed serial number, or in disrepair will be destroyed by order of the court. Seized and/or found guns that are not stolen and deemed to be in good working order are sold or traded, by order of the court, to companies such as Law Enforcement Police Suppliers, not to the community (public). Trade or cash for these guns can only be used by the Sheriff’s Office for equipment needs by our agency.

Guns that are traded or bought by a law enforcement police supplier may be sold to other Law Enforcement agencies or the public, but only by the police supplier. Not the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone who buys a gun from a Law Enforcement Supplier must undergo a criminal records check, cannot have any mental disabilities and must obtain a certified permit from the Sheriff of their respective county.

“The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office under my administration has never directly sold any firearms of any kind to the public.”

Respectfully,

Terry S. Johnson
