Sergeant Chad Laws Receives Prestigious D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year Award

On June 17, 2021, Sergeant Chad Laws was presented the prestigious D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Officer of the Year award by the North Carolina D.A.R.E. Officers’ Association at their annual training conference.
 
Sergeant Laws has been employed with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office since 2018 and has been a D.A.R.E. officer for the past twenty years.  He has taught the program at the elementary, middle, and high school levels within public, independent, and charter schools. 
 
“I am truly honored to receive this award,” says Sergeant Laws.  “I have always tried to serve as a positive role model and support my students in and out of the classroom. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue teaching the D.A.R.E. program, and I look forward to continuing this important work to have a positive effect on the youth in our community.”

D.A.R.E. launched in 1983 as a substance abuse prevention education program and has been implemented in thousands of schools across the country. Its mission today is teaching students good decision-making skills to help them lead safe and healthy lives while their vision is a world in which students everywhere are empowered to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance use, and other dangerous behaviors.

ACSO Seeks Information Regarding Two Recent Drive-By Shootings

On June 20, 2021, at approximately 5:30 a.m., the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in reference to a drive-by shooting on Anderson Road. Two hours later, around 7:30 a.m., deputies responded to a second drive-by shooting on Green Level Church Road. 

At this time, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division believes that these two incidences are related.

Male Charged with Felony for Fleeing to Elude Arrest

On June 12, 2021, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Alamance County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call on Bass Mountain Road in Snow Camp. The caller stated that her son, William Mayes, had threatened to kill her.

After arriving on scene, deputies were notified that Mr. Mayes was in close proximity and soon came into contact with him as he was trying to flee in a vehicle. Deputies attempted to stop Mr. Mayes and a short vehicle pursuit commenced down Keystone Raod towards Bass Mountain Road. Deputies were successful in blocking Mr. Mayes at the intersection of Keystone Road. and Bass Mountain Road, and Mr. Mayes was taken into custody.

Female Charged with Felony for Sexual Assault

On June 13, 2021, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in reference to a sexual assault that occurred at a party on July 26, 2020. 

As a result of the investigation, Jessica Nicole Brown was charged with a felony for Statutory Sexual Offense Against A Person who is 13, 14, or 15 Years Old.

Traffic Stop Yields Cocaine

On June 16, 2021, Alamance County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on Fleming Graham Road for failure to maintain the lane and a vehicle equipment violation. During the course of the traffic stop, a K9 positively indicated on the vehicle and a probable cause search was performed. The search yielded .58 grams of crack cocaine.

Curtis Lee Riley was charged with a felony for Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance and given a $2,500 unsecured bond.

Inmate Charged with Felony for Possession of Drugs in Jail

On June 17, 2021 at approximately 12:16 a.m., Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputies were notified by Alamance County Detention Staff that they identified suspected drugs on an inmate in the Detention Center. Deputies responded and took possession of the suspected drugs which appeared to be 0.13gm of Methamphetamine and ¾ of an Alprazolam (commonly known as Xanax) bar.

After interviewing the suspect and further investigation, Mary McDonald admitted to possessing Methamphetamine, and the pills were positively identified as Alprazolam. Ms. McDonald stated that she accidentally brought the items into the Detention Center in a hair clip that she had in her hair. Ms. McDonald was charged with two counts of Felony Possession of controlled substance in a jail facility.

Female Charged with Felony for Possession of Firearm

On Monday, June 14, 2021, at 7:20 p.m., members of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle. During initial contact, the odor of Marijuana was detected. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded 8.68 grams of Marijuana, 2 handguns, and several paraphernalia items. A passenger in the vehicle, Sheena Marie Ambrose, was arrested and charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Ms. Ambrose was taken before Magistrate Roney and issued a first appearance in court for June 15, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. and given a $2,000.00 secured bond.

Human Exploitation Team Arrests Male for Soliciting Sex Acts

On Tuesday, June 15, 2021, members of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Human Exploitation Team were conducting an online investigation which lead to the arrest of Edwin Alexis Menjivar Barillas. 
 
Mr. Menjivar Barillas solicited sex acts from whom he believed to be a minor in Alamance County on a social media site. He then appeared at a predetermined location to engage in the acts.  When he arrived at the location, he was quickly taken into custody by members of the Human Exploitation Team.
 
Mr. Menjivar Barillas was taken before the Magistrate at the Alamance County Detention Center where he received a $10,000 secured bond.

Male Charged with Multiple Drug Charges

On June 15, 2021, at approximately 2:30 p.m., members of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit conducted a traffic stop. Due to the nature of the stop, a K9 was utilized on the vehicle, and a positive alert was received. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded 90.9 grams of Methamphetamine, 1.66 grams Heroin, and several drug paraphernalia items.

The driver, William Clifton Pollock, was taken before Magistrate Hunter and charged with two counts of Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession of Heroin, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Mr. Pollock was issued a citation for Driving While License Revoked and having a fictitious registration.

Four Males Arrested in Connection with Armed Home Invasion

On June 11, 2021, at approximately 6:00 a.m., the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office responded to Brucewood Road in reference to a home invasion in progress. The suspects left the residence and were pursued by one of the victims and then a deputy. The suspects ended up wrecking their vehicle in the area of Viewmont Drive and then fled the scene. 

Once a deputy arrived at the residence, two females stated that they were threatened by three males with guns who demanded to know where the money, drugs, and jewelry were. The females were then told to lie face down on the bed while another female escaped unnoticed, went outside, and called 911. 

During the course of the investigation, the suspects were identified. In addition, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant for Luke Lloyd Clark’s property in which he was charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of stolen property, and carrying a concealed weapon.

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office is still attempting to locate another suspect, Wayne Thomasson, who has been charged with aiding and abetting an armed robbery.
