Wreath To Be Laid At Slain Deputy’s Grave
On Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at 10:00am, the ACSO will honor the memory of Alamance County Deputy Sheriff Lawrence George Gowens.
The service will be held at the Historic Providence Church Cemetery, 819 N. Main St. Graham, NC. The Service will be conducted by the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard.
Deputy Gowens was killed 88 years ago on Friday, July 31, 1936, after responding to a domestic dispute in Graham, N.C., only two blocks from the Sheriff’s Office, where Robert S. Campbell had just shot and wounded his wife Bertha.
Deputy Gowens attempted to arrest Campbell when Campbell fired a single shot from his shotgun striking Deputy Gowens. Gowens died an hour and a half after the shooting.
Each year, the ACSO honors the memory of four Officers who have died in the line of Duty on or about the day of their death at their final resting place.
Family and friends will attend the service. All are welcomed to attend.
